SEO?
What the heck is SEO?
SEO is "Search Engine Optimization" for you newbies to the online world of marketing and media and it's actually a big deal if you want your online storefront (domain/website) to stand out locally, regionally, nationally, and/or globally.
And I think that is where we should begin in this whole blog - you making a decision to either stand out, show up, show off, expose thyself (flash thy private html to the entire planet?), be a Google Search Engine Player, find out what it is like to be popular among searchers who are looking for what you have to offer OR to have a simple website sitting on page one million for your desired keyword phrases (those words that normal, and I guess even abnormal, people type into their search bars to get to a product, definition, life-changing philosophy, etc.) - to be a technological dam who has conformed enough to have presence on the old WWW, but who leaves the effort there and thus remains an outsider and an unknown entity who wishes they were more popular to Google, but who will never get asked to Front Page Proms where you might get "clicked" by the head cheerleader or strong QB.
Do you want to be the "Pretty in Pink" Duckie version of a website or do you want to be the "Magic Mike" Channing Tatum version of a website? (Feel free to add and subtract better examples of actors/movies that fit your tastes: well-designed but unpopular or well-hung/optimized and extremely popular.)
Okay - ignore my digression.
It's Memorial Day and I should not be working or writing or trumpeting my industry - but sometimes on holidays I do more work than on normal workdays - Figured I would go ahead and run with it.
Anyway, you need to decide what you want your website to be and what you want your website to do. If you simply want to weebly-wobble around in the online world like a bit character in a PC game, you are welcome to do so. But don't expect to save the princess and don't expect any online gold - you are not going to get any of either sort of 'booty' if you don't make use of some really professional SEO - the sort that is not only foundational for your wider marketing efforts but also the sort that can be a catalyst for viral media efforts (using multi-channel "King Content").
Truth: Those who use SEO-based Marketing and Media tend to outpace their non-SEO-using competitors like Lance Armstrong (Living Strong with full Doping) out-pedaling Justin Bieber on a tricycle with a Jonas Brother or two on his handlebars.
Seriously, do you really want to be the Biebs on a trike?
Because that is what you are on the online stage - especially when trying to Tour de France against thousands of others who are using the very legal Performance Enhancing Drugs available through excellent Search Engine Optimization.
That is what I was - a website baby in the shallow end of the urine-filled kiddie pool - before I started using Texas-sized SEO to drive my online marketing and media efforts. I say "Texas-sized SEO" because everything is bigger in Texas and because you don't mess with Texas - Thus, I am advocating the kind of SEO that goes bigger so you can look better and show that you are not one to be messed with either.
I've worked with a bunch on SEO companies and am now even running a SEO division at the Texas marketing and media company I work for now (Dream Taxi Marketing and Media) - and I can tell you that there are a bunch of Rhode Island-sized and even Detroit back alley-style SEO groups out there you do not want to get involved with. Why? You will spend your money, get no ROI, and probably find yourself with a wounded domain, which will never recover.
And while those sorts of SEO morons and website killers do exist as a mass, do not let their mistakes scare you back off the ledge - If you want to grow your business, make more money, get Google to ask you out to a front page Homecoming dance, etc., then you are going to have to do some marketing and media with some Texas SEO.
This blog is not meant to tell you how just yet - but this blog post is meant to wake you up, Neo!!! The Matrix has you, so you might as well do something cool to make Agent Smith smirk and say, "Good job, Mr. Anderson! Your website is on page one and your bottom line is up 20%." At least before he tries to kill you…
Have questions? I have answers and even better I have referrals.
Why not visit moz.com or distilled and see what they have to say about it?
And when you are ready for some Texas SEO, check out Dream Taxi Marketing and Media so I can help you leave Duckie and Justin B. behind oncer and for all.
My name is BADonley - At your service…
